Family Law

Family law focuses on laws that regulate the family unit, such as marriage, divorce, children, and property ownership. Although the laws that regulate family are not terribly complicated, disputes can often end up quite complicated because of the fact-specific nature of such disputes.

Family Law

At Edward Allen, we take the time to thoroughly understand our client’s issues, as fact-intensive as they may be. That puts us in the best position to be the most effective advocate we can be — to our clients’ benefit.

Child Custody & Support

One of the last things that anyone wants is to fight over the custody of his or her child. But sadly, it happens all the time. And not just custody: how much time each parent spends with the child, who has the child for which holiday, where the child goes to school, what activities the child can participate in, which parent drives the child to the other parent’s house, and more. None of those arguments are fun. Then, add the fact that one parent will have to pay the other parent support each month. Even the most seemingly agreeable parents can find themselves in harsh disputes.

At Edward Allen, we do our best to minimize the adversarial part of the process in hopes of getting both parents to agree about as many issues as they can agree on. Ultimately, the parents are the ones who are in the best position to decide what is in the best interests of their child — not a court. Only when there is a true, complete cooperation breakdown will we resort to petitioning the court to decide a dispute. But when we do bring a dispute to court, we advocate vigorously and ensure that the court is armed with as many facts as possible to make an informed decision.

Divorce

The events that precede any divorce are emotionally exhausting, and a divorce proceeding its self is no different. At Edward Allen, we are sensitive to the fact that divorce actions can be nasty and just as emotionally exhausting as the reason for the divorce.

We will advise you about the practicalities of your divorce (legal ramifications, property division, custody, etc.) and pinpoint what is worth fighting over and what is not. We can even shelter you from the emotionally exhausting process by negotiating with the other side outside of your presence and by attempting to minimize court appearances and disputes, if you want to try to emotionally distance yourself from the often highly-contentious process.

Our attorneys are also especially skilled at discovering hidden assets and recovering improperly transferred assets. This can be very important when divorcing somebody who is self-employed or who has executed asset-protection plans.
